How to Keep Snakes Out of Your Garage

If you live in an area with snakes, you might be surprised at how easily they can sneak into your garage. Snakes are constantly looking for cool places to hide, and even a small crack is enough for them to get inside and make your space their home.

Most snakes prefer to be away from people, but if they do live close by, they’ll stick to gardens. They may decide to go to a garage if they’re certain they can get food there, such as bugs, lizards or rodents. If they find the garage to be a reliable source of food, they’ll be more than happy to set up camp there for an extended time, especially if it’s too hot or cold outside and they need a place with a regulated temperature.

So, what do you need to know to prevent snakes from getting in or to achieve removal of snakes from your garage? Read on for our best suggestions.

Be aware of access points

Obviously, if you leave garage doors or side doors open, this invites animals of all types (birds, rodents, snakes, lizards, etc.) to come right on in. But even when you are good about keeping doors closed, there are still ways for pests to get inside.

If there is a hole or crack in the wall that’s large enough for a mouse to get inside, you can feel pretty confident a snake can find its way in as well. Check all the walls for signs of cracks or spaces, and check that the trim on the garage door actually reaches all the way to the ground. If not, you will need to add some weatherproof strips or some new trim to close off those gaps to prevent snakes from getting inside.

Other snakes are able to climb up trees, which means they can fall on rooftops and thus get into vents. If you have an attached garage, look in other access points of your home where the snake may have gotten in.

How to get snakes out of a garage

In addition to knowing how to keep snakes out, it’s also important to know how to get them out if they’re already inside.

It’s generally advisable to contact your local animal control for assistance with snakes. Even bites from non-venomous snakes can hurt and cause allergic reactions or infections. Bites from venomous snakes can cause severe illness or death.

If you do decide to try to move a snake without professional assistance, you can try to set out a trap, carefully following the directions. Whatever approach you take, you should avoid directly confronting the snake by trying to move or touch it. This will result in the snake feeling threatened and retreating into a safe place, making it even harder to get the snake out.

You could also just open up the door and wait for it to leave. This works in many cases, and avoids animal control having to make a trip to your property.
